What Is NYT Crossplay?

NYT Crossplay is a 2-player real-time word game launched by The New York Times in January 2026. Like Scrabble, players draw rack tiles and place words on a shared board, earning points from letter values and bonus squares. The real-time format adds a speed dimension — you and your opponent play simultaneously rather than taking turns, so fast word recognition is as important as finding the highest-scoring play.

How This Tool Helps

Enter up to 12 tiles — including blank tiles represented by ? — and the finder checks every possible combination against the ENABLE word list. Results are sorted by Scrabble-equivalent point value so the highest-scoring options appear first. Use it to study your rack between games, practice finding plays quickly, or verify that a word you spotted is actually legal.

Crossplay Strategy: Speed + High-Value Tiles

Because Crossplay is real-time, you often need to choose between a slightly lower-scoring word you can play immediately and a higher-scoring word that takes another few seconds to find. High-value tiles (Q, Z, J, X) and bonus squares still dominate scoring — landing a Q or Z on a multiplier square can win a round outright. A few practical tips:

  • Prioritize bonus squares early: In real-time play, your opponent is also racing for those squares. Claim Double/Triple Word squares before they do.
  • Keep common hooks in mind: Short words that hook onto existing tiles (adding S, ED, ING) let you play quickly without needing a long setup.
  • Use blanks for high-impact plays: Save blank tiles for words that hit premium squares or complete a bingo (using all rack tiles).
  • Practice with this tool: Run your common tile combinations through the finder to build a mental library of top plays — speed comes from pattern recognition.

About the Dictionary

NYT Crossplay's official word list is not publicly distributed. Like every other public Crossplay helper tool, we use ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon) as the standard proxy. ENABLE is a public-domain list that closely mirrors the Scrabble TWL/NWL and covers the vast majority of everyday English words. In practice, results from ENABLE match Crossplay's accepted words for nearly all common plays.

There can be edge cases — ENABLE may include a word Crossplay rejects, or vice versa, particularly for obscure or very new words. For important tournament plays, verify directly in the game. You can also use our Dictionary Checker to look up individual words.
