What Dictionary Does This Use?
This checker uses the ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), a public-domain word list that closely tracks the TWL (Tournament Word List) and NWL used in competitive North American Scrabble. It contains over 170,000 words and is the same dictionary powering the rest of Unscramble Wizard's tools.
Why Is My Word Not in the Dictionary?
Several categories of words are typically excluded from Scrabble dictionaries:
- Proper nouns: Names of people, places, and brands (e.g., "Google", "Paris").
- Abbreviations: Shortened forms like "Dr." or "etc."
- Hyphenated words: Most hyphenated compounds are not accepted.
- Very new words: Dictionary updates lag behind everyday language use.
- Offensive slurs: Official Scrabble dictionaries have removed certain slurs in recent years.
If your word is valid in everyday English but not in ENABLE, it may still be in the Collins Scrabble Words (CSW/SOWPODS) list used in international tournaments.
How Scrabble and WWF Scores Are Calculated
Each letter has a face-value point score. The scores shown here are the sum of all tile values in the word — they do not include board multipliers. On an actual board, landing on Double/Triple Letter or Double/Triple Word squares can dramatically increase the score.
